Instead, he gave kids a short multiple-choice test, the Mickey Mouse kind sold in bookstores. Trouble was: Gary had no real training or authority to be administering IQ tests. The gifted and talented club was invitation only - Gary's invitation, that is. Some days Gary would oversee an after-school activity. Inevitably, a few of his favored 10-year-old students would still be hanging around - joking with him or sitting on his lap. Every day at 3 p.m., as soon as the bell rang, I was expected to climb those stairs and report to Gary's desk. My classroom was on the first floor of the elementary building - just a staircase away from Gary. In this story, Finding Good Trouble, I want to weave a romance story with the background of a world that is sometimes cruel and often dangerous. I understand the meaning of Black Lives Matter. Being married to a black man, I have personally experienced it. I have friends and acquaintances who daily face systemic racism. I have listened to their speeches, and I was moved. I have personally met the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Reverend Al Sharpton and the G.O.A.T., the late Muhammad Ali. I feel that I have a life experience that many white writers do not have. However, my parents always taught me that everyone is equal, no matter the color of their skin. Like Parker in this story, I grew up in an all-white community. I have witnessed first-hand the racial tensions that exist in America. I have lived and worked in a community that is extremely segregated. However, it is a story that I have wanted to write for years. I know that this story will have elements that will disturb some readers. A few words about the story, Finding Good Trouble.
